TLDR The skin protects the body, helps with immunity, senses, temperature control, and makes vitamin D.
The skin, the body's largest organ, consists of the epidermis, dermis, subcutis, and cutaneous adnexa like hair follicles and glands. It originates from the ectoderm, neuroectoderm, and mesoderm. The skin acts as a barrier against external threats, supports immunity, serves sensory and thermoregulatory functions, and is vital for vitamin D synthesis.
