TLDR A mutation in the IL2RA gene increases the risk of alopecia areata.
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the link between interleukin gene polymorphisms and alopecia areata (AA), focusing on SNPs in IL2RA, IL17A, IL12B, and IL23R genes. The study analyzed data from 1,416 patients and 1,307 controls, revealing a significant association between the IL2RA rs3118470 polymorphism and AA, particularly in Asian populations, while other SNPs showed no significant association. The findings emphasize the genetic complexity and population-specific nature of AA, suggesting that IL2RA polymorphisms may contribute to AA susceptibility and highlighting the need for further research across diverse ethnic groups.
