Impact of Intermittent Fasting on Insulin Sensitivity and HbA1c Levels Among Overweight Adults with Prediabetes

    Rizwana Riaz, Farah Nadia Sheikh
TLDR Intermittent fasting improved blood sugar control in overweight adults with prediabetes.
The study evaluated the effects of a 12-week intermittent fasting regimen on insulin sensitivity and HbA1c levels in 42 overweight adults with prediabetes, with 38 completing the study. Participants followed a 16-hour fasting window daily. Results showed significant improvements: fasting glucose decreased from 111.6 to 102.3 mg/dL, fasting insulin from 15.9 to 12.8 µIU/mL, HOMA-IR from 4.37 to 3.23, and HbA1c from 6.05% to 5.78%, all with p < 0.001. The findings suggest intermittent fasting as a practical, low-cost strategy to delay type 2 diabetes progression, though larger trials are recommended.
