TLDR Iodotherapy for thyroid cancer can cause dry mouth, taste loss, infections, and hair loss, so report side effects to doctors.
The study reviewed the side effects of iodotherapy in treating thyroid neoplasia, a common cancer in the head and neck region. After surgical removal of the tumor, patients undergo iodotherapy with Iodine131 to eliminate remaining cancerous tissue. The research, conducted through an integrative bibliographic review, identified numerous side effects, including xerostomia, sialoadenitis, hyposalivation, loss of taste, increased susceptibility to oral infections, and hair loss, among others. The study emphasized the importance of reporting these side effects to healthcare providers and highlighted the pharmacist's role in managing iodotherapy. It also called for further research in this area.
