TLDR Kerion Celsi in children is treated with antifungals, not surgery, to prevent scarring.
Kerion Celsi is a deep fungal infection of the scalp, more common in children aged 3 and older, characterized by swelling, boggy lesions, pain, alopecia, and purulent secretions. Diagnosis relies on clinical examination and confirmation through microscopy, fungal culture, and molecular procedures. The primary fungal culprits are Trichophyton tonsurans and Microsporum canis. Treatment involves systemic and topical antifungals, with antibiotics as needed, to prevent scarring alopecia. Surgery should be avoided, and distinguishing it from bacterial skin infections is crucial.
