The Therapeutic and Preventive Effects of Light-Emitting Diode (LED) for Post-Inflammatory Erythema and Hyperpigmentation: A Pilot Study

    This pilot study investigated the effects of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on post-inflammatory erythema (PIE) and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) using a model induced by UVB exposure on the thighs of 10 healthy subjects. The study tested 830 nm and 590 nm LEDs for both therapeutic and preventive purposes. Results showed that 830 nm LEDs significantly reduced erythema index (EI) and melanin index (MI) compared to the control group, indicating effective improvement in PIE and PIH. Both 830 nm and 590 nm LEDs demonstrated preventive effects for PIE, with significant reductions in ΔEI compared to controls. The study concludes that 830 nm LEDs are effective for both prevention and treatment of PIE and PIH, while 590 nm LEDs are effective for prevention.
