Using BrdU pulse-chase experiments and immunohistochemistry, the researchers identified Lhx2-positive cells in this region, suggesting a similarity to stem cell markers in hair follicles. The study also explored the role of R-spondin 4 (Rspo4) and its interaction with Fzd8 and Lrp6 in the nail matrix, indicating that these pathways might control nail growth and differentiation. The findings suggested that mesenchymal–epithelial interactions through Rspo4–Fzd8–catenin beta 1 pathways could regulate postnatal nail growth. The study involved a small sample of five newborn BALB/c Cr Slc mice.
