TLDR Malassezia folliculitis mainly affects the trunk in males and is better detected with d-PAS staining.
The study differentiated Malassezia folliculitis (MF) from non-Malassezia folliculitis (NMF) in 100 patients, initially diagnosing 20 with MF and 80 with NMF. However, 16 additional cases were reclassified as MF using serial tissue sectioning and d-PAS staining. MF was found to predominantly affect the trunk and was more common in males, while NMF was more associated with facial and leg involvement. The study emphasized the effectiveness of d-PAS staining in improving MF detection, particularly in male patients with trunk lesions, and suggested that further research was needed due to limitations such as missing data.
