October 2024 in “Archives of Dermatological Research” A large-scale study involving 51,561 patients with alopecia areata (AA) and 51,410 controls found that AA is significantly associated with hematological malignancies (HMs), particularly non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but not with solid malignancies (SMs), except in cases of alopecia totalis and universalis. The association with HMs was stronger in patients with late-onset AA (≥ 50 years). The study suggests a need for further research to confirm these findings in other populations.
