TLDR Treating hirsutism and acne in women with PCOS needs a personalized approach using oral contraceptives, antiandrogens, and sometimes metformin.
This narrative review highlights that managing hirsutism and acne in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) requires a personalized and comprehensive approach. Combined oral contraceptives are the first-line treatment due to their effectiveness in reducing androgen levels and regulating menstrual cycles. Antiandrogens like spironolactone are effective for hirsutism, while metformin addresses metabolic issues and insulin resistance. Emerging therapies, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, show promise in improving insulin sensitivity and reducing androgen levels, though evidence is limited by study heterogeneity and short follow-up periods. The review emphasizes the need for high-quality, long-term studies to refine treatment strategies and enhance clinical outcomes.
