Clinical Presentation and Occurrence of Contagious Skin Diseases Mange and Orf in Goat Herds in Zambia

    Katja Anton
TLDR Mange and orf are present in some goat herds in Zambia, but more research is needed.
This study investigated the occurrence and clinical presentation of mange and orf in goat herds in Zambia, involving 20 households across the Southern and Central provinces. Mange was found in 10% of herds in both provinces, with Sarcoptes spp. mites in the Southern and Demodex spp. in the Central province, primarily causing alopecia. Orf was detected in 10% of herds in the Central province, presenting as small lesions and pustules in the mouth. The low occurrence of these diseases may be due to diagnostic challenges, mild symptoms, and seasonal conditions. The study highlights the need for further research during the rainy season and on ectoparasite control strategies, as well as the seroprevalence of orf for a better understanding of its impact.
