TLDR Current tools inadequately measure quality of life in children with alopecia areata, needing better instruments.
Alopecia areata (AA) significantly impacts the quality of life (QoL) in pediatric patients, affecting self-esteem and social interactions. This systematic review evaluated 18 QoL instruments across 12 studies to determine their effectiveness in capturing the full impact of AA on children. The review identified 10 key domains, including emotional well-being, social functioning, and self-image, but found considerable variation in the domains covered by existing tools. This highlights a lack of consensus on critical QoL aspects to measure in pediatric AA and underscores the need for new, comprehensive QoL instruments tailored to this population.
