TLDR BECD helps straighten wavy hair by reducing undulation.
The study investigates the effects of bis-ethoxydiglycol cyclohexane 1,4-dicarboxylate (BECD) on wavy hair undulation. BECD, a compound with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, was found to relax wavy hair undulation when applied to wet hair, which was then hand-straightened and dried. The compound adsorbs onto non-keratin proteins, promoting the contraction and rearrangement of molecular chains, leading to a more uniform structure and reduced undulation. In contrast, untreated wavy hair does not exhibit this uniformity, resulting in persistent undulation. The study suggests that BECD-treated hair shows reduced molecular mobility and moisture absorption, preventing the hair from reverting to its original wavy state after drying.
