TLDR Medicago sativa extract may help treat vitiligo by enhancing skin and hair pigmentation.
The study investigated the effects of Medicago sativa methanol extract on skin hypopigmentation disorders in C57/BL6 mice, particularly focusing on vitiligo. The extract, containing significant phenolic and flavonoid content, demonstrated 71% antioxidant activity and included 18 compounds, with seven previously undetected in this species. When applied in an oil-in-water cream and combined with UVA light exposure, the extract showed a significant pigmentation effect on skin and hair, as evidenced by visual scoring and histopathological examinations. The findings suggested that M. sativa extract could enhance pigmentation in hypopigmented skin and hair, indicating its potential as a treatment for vitiligo.
