TLDR Medicaid coverage for alopecia areata treatments is inconsistent and often limited.
The study examines Medicaid coverage of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, specifically baricitinib and ritlecitinib, for treating alopecia areata (AA) across the United States. It reveals that coverage is highly variable and often restricted, with only 52.9% of plans covering both drugs and most requiring prior authorization, which can delay treatment. No plans covered the newly approved deuruxolitinib. The disparity in coverage between AA and conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, which is widely covered, may be due to perceptions of AA as a cosmetic issue despite its significant impact on quality of life. The study highlights the need for policy changes to improve access and reduce healthcare disparities, particularly for racial minorities. Limitations include the focus on Medicaid, which may not represent overall US coverage.
