TLDR Menopause is a clear hormonal transition in women, while men experience a gradual testosterone decline, with some needing lifestyle changes and targeted therapy.
This paper examines menopause in women and the concept of "male menopause," focusing on the biological and clinical aspects of midlife endocrine changes. Menopause is identified as a clear transition with ovarian failure and loss of hormones, leading to symptoms like vasomotor issues and increased bone and cardiovascular risks. In contrast, male ageing involves a gradual decline in testosterone, with only some men experiencing symptomatic Late-Onset Hypogonadism (LOH), characterized by sexual dysfunction and mood disturbances. The paper discusses diagnostic challenges and management strategies for LOH, emphasizing lifestyle changes and targeted testosterone therapy. It calls for a comprehensive approach to midlife endocrine changes, integrating lifestyle, endocrine, and psychosocial care to improve outcomes for both genders.
