TLDR Menopause often causes hair changes, and many women need better support and information.
This study investigated hair changes during menopause, involving 1,457 respondents in England, with 84% reporting symptoms such as shedding (65%), thinning (57%), and texture changes (45%). Diagnoses of androgenetic alopecia and frontal fibrosing alopecia were more common in peri- and postmenopause. Many participants lacked information, with 32% receiving no advice and 6% unsure where to seek help. Online searches and nonmedical practitioners were common advice sources, while fewer consulted medical professionals. The mean Dermatology Life Quality Index was 4.32, with 27% experiencing at least moderate impact. The study highlights the need for better recognition and support to alleviate the psychosocial burden.
