Analú Vivian, Vânia Oliveira Carvalho, Ana Elisa Kiszewski
TLDR Mesalazine showed limited effectiveness in treating children with severe alopecia areata.
This study investigated the effectiveness of mesalazine in treating moderate to severe alopecia areata in 18 children in Brazil, with 14 completing the study. Over 12 months, there was a significant 66.8% reduction in the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score. Notably, 40% of patients showed a highly significant response, and those with diffuse alopecia areata experienced excellent improvement. Mesalazine was well-tolerated, with no significant laboratory changes, indicating it as a safe treatment option. However, the study's small sample size and concurrent corticosteroid use are limitations, and further controlled trials are needed to confirm these results.
