TLDR Magnesium and iron deficiencies may cause menstrual cycle disorders.
The study involving 200 women of reproductive age found a significant association between magnesium and iron deficiency and menstrual cycle disorders (MCD). Women with MCD showed higher rates of magnesium deficiency symptoms, lower serum levels of magnesium, hemoglobin, and ferritin, and more frequent somatic and gynecological conditions. Notably, 93% of the MCD group exhibited magnesium deficiency compared to 67% of controls. Common symptoms included hair loss, headache, and irritability. These findings suggest that magnesium and iron deficiencies may play a role in the pathophysiology of menstrual disorders, highlighting the importance of addressing micronutrient deficiencies in this population.
