TLDR Malassezia species may contribute to hair loss in AGA patients.
The microbiology research team led by Professor Takashi Sugita conducted studies on Malassezia species, focusing on their role in androgenetic alopecia (AGA). They discovered a specific short sequence repeat (SSR) type in the ribosomal RNA genes of Malassezia globosa and Malassezia restricta that is associated with higher colonization in AGA patients, suggesting a link to AGA development. Additionally, they developed a medium that enhances Malassezia growth, aiding in its study, and explored gene recombination and the role of calcineurin in Trichosporon asahii's pathogenicity. These studies enhance the understanding of microbial factors in skin conditions and potential treatments.
