Applications and Safety of Microneedling and PRP in Skin of Color
January 2019
TLDR Microneedling and PRP are safe and effective for skin rejuvenation in people with skin of color, with fewer side effects than laser treatments.
Microneedling and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments gained popularity as less aggressive yet effective cosmetic procedures for skin rejuvenation and treating conditions like scars, pigmentary disorders, and hair loss, especially in patients with skin of color. These treatments were preferred over laser therapies due to a lower risk of adverse events such as postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring, which were more common in patients with skin of color due to differences in melanocyte distribution and activity. Both microneedling and PRP were found to be safe for all ethnic skin types, causing minimal disruption to melanocyte properties, with fewer side effects and quick recovery times. The chapter reviewed literature and provided treatment and safety recommendations for these modalities in skin of color.
