TLDR Mimosine is toxic to animals, causing hair loss, infertility, and growth issues, but its exact harmful mechanism is unclear.
The thesis explored the toxic effects of mimosine, a compound found in leguminous plants, which had been known to cause hair loss, infertility, and growth retardation in animals. Despite previous research, the mechanism behind mimosine's toxicity remained unclear. The study investigated the structural similarity between mimosine and pyridoxal, particularly focusing on their functional groups, to determine if this resemblance contributed to mimosine's toxic effects. Although experiments were conducted to explore this hypothesis, no conclusive mechanism was identified. The research aimed to clarify how mimosine might interfere with amino acid incorporation into proteins or inhibit metal-containing enzymes, but results were varied and inconclusive.
