TLDR Indian Sandalwood is valued for its fragrance and medicinal benefits but faces production challenges due to overharvesting and disease.
Santalum album L., or Indian Sandalwood, is a valuable plant known for its fragrant heartwood and medicinal properties, extensively cultivated in India, Australia, and Indonesia. Its production has declined due to overharvesting and spike disease. The plant thrives in well-drained, loamy soil with a pH of 6‒9 and requires specific rainfall conditions. It is hemiparasitic, relying on host plants for nutrients, making the selection of suitable hosts crucial for its survival and growth. Indian Sandalwood is widely used in perfumes and personal care products and has numerous medicinal benefits, including antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-hair loss properties.
