TLDR Topical minoxidil is dangerous for cats and dogs.
This study highlights the risks of topical minoxidil exposure in pets, particularly cats and dogs, with 488 cases reported to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center from 2013 to 2023. The majority of cases involved oral exposure due to exploratory behavior, with 42.4% resulting in clinical toxicosis and 3.4% leading to adverse outcomes, including 3 deaths. The study found a strong correlation (R=0.760) between increased public interest in topical minoxidil and the rise in related poison control cases. The findings emphasize the need for dermatologists to discuss the potential risks of topical minoxidil to household pets with their patients and to advise on preventive measures and the importance of prompt veterinary care in case of exposure.
