TLDR Improving prostate and urinary health can enhance sexual function and mental well-being in older men.
This study involving 3,056 older men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) found that lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) negatively impact sexual function, particularly erectile dysfunction, and are significantly associated with depression and anxiety. Improved prostate and urinary tract health positively influence psychological well-being, highlighting the importance of early intervention to mitigate these adverse effects on quality of life. The study emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to address these issues and calls for further research to explore the impact of LUTS and develop effective management strategies. Despite its strengths, the study's reliance on self-reported data and focus on older men are noted limitations.
