Morphological Features of the General Cover in Long-Haired Cat Breeds

    P. S. Zagorets, Natalya A. Slesarenko
TLDR Long-haired cats have thinner skin where hair is thicker, and all have unique collagen patterns.
The study investigated the skin characteristics of long-haired cat breeds using various morphological research methods. It found a general pattern across breeds, where an inverse relationship existed between the thickness of the epidermis and the thickness of the hair cover. Additionally, a specific glomerular design of collagen structures in the dermis was observed in all breeds. The research also demonstrated that the depth of hair follicles and hair density were influenced by the anatomical and topographic features of the skin.

Treatments for hair loss, including finasteride, dutasteride, minoxidil, ketoconazole, microneedling, and low level laser light therapy, which aim to reduce DHT production, increase cell absorption and blood flow, and stimulate epidermal stem cells. It also stresses the importance of patience when using these treatments.
