Evidence for Murine Cutaneous Immune Surveillance Localized to Hair Follicle Epithelium

TLDR Hair follicles in mice help detect and respond to germs.
Recent studies have identified the expression of the anti-microbial peptide PGRP-S in mouse hair follicle epithelium, specifically in certain skin regions, using a dsRed reporter. This expression is not linked to lymphoid aggregates but is inducible upon exposure to Staphylococcus aureus, particularly in flank skin hair follicles. These findings suggest that hair follicles may play a role in immune surveillance, responding to environmental exposures.
