TLDR Nail and hair changes are common in severe chronic kidney disease and should be treated to improve patients' quality of life.
In a study of 100 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, nail and hair changes were observed, particularly in those at stage 5D. Nail changes were present in 30% of patients, with the most common being half and half nails (Lindsay nails) in 12%. Hair changes were noted in 29% of patients, with sparse hair being the most frequent finding in 19%. Early recognition and treatment of these changes were suggested to improve the quality of life for CKD patients.
