Nanocarriers‐Based Topical Formulations for Acne Treatment

The document discussed the use of nanocarriers in topical formulations for acne treatment. It highlighted that while retinoids are commonly used despite their side effects, plant extracts and essential oils face challenges like low skin penetration and stability. Nanocarriers, including polymeric and lipid carriers, were presented as effective alternatives that offer sustained drug release, improved stability, and reduced side effects. They also facilitate deposition into hair follicles and retention in the epidermis/dermis, targeting acne development and clinical forms. Performance assays showed that nanocarrier systems could reduce acne lesions, inflammation, and retinoid-induced irritation, while being safe and non-irritant to the skin. The chapter reviewed recent advancements in nanocarrier-based antiacne therapy.
