Lack of Effect of Spironolactone on Hair Shaft Diameter in Hirsute Females

TLDR Spironolactone did not make hair thinner in women with excess hair growth.
In a double-blind placebo-controlled study examining the efficacy of spironolactone (100 mg daily) for treating idiopathic hirsutism, researchers found no objective benefit from the treatment over a 9-month period. The study showed a mean increase in hair shaft diameter of +15% with a 95% confidence interval (CI) ranging from -0.4% to +29%, indicating a lack of significant effect. Additionally, there were no changes observed in circulating serum androgen concentrations as a result of the spironolactone treatment.
