TLDR Vitamin D receptor FokI gene variation is not linked to alopecia areata.
The study investigated the relationship between Vitamin D receptor (VDR) FokI gene polymorphism and alopecia areata (AA) in 25 patients with extensive forms of AA and 27 healthy controls. Genotypes were determined using PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, with allele frequencies for F and f alleles being 76.0% and 24.0% in the alopecic group and 72.2% and 27.7% in the control group. The study found no statistically significant differences in the frequencies of the VDR FokI genotype between the patient and control groups, suggesting no association between VDR FokI polymorphism and AA. However, it recommended further studies in other populations and larger groups to explore other VDR polymorphisms.
