Non-Surgical Treatments for Basal Cell Skin Cancer

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was the most common nonmelanoma skin cancer, primarily caused by ultraviolet radiation. While surgery was the gold standard for treatment, nonsurgical options were available for those unsuitable for surgery. This review summarized the efficacy of nonsurgical treatments such as destructive methods (curettage and electrodessication, cryosurgery, laser), photodynamic therapy, topical medications, and hedgehog pathway inhibitors. These alternatives were deemed safe and effective, with treatment selection depending on factors like tumor location, size, histopathological subtype, cosmetic outcomes, and patient preference. The review utilized literature from databases including PubMed, MedLine, Web of Science, and RSCI.
