Open and Closed Structure

TLDR The 3D hair follicle model improves understanding of hair growth and drug testing.
The study developed three-dimensional dermal papilla spheroids (DPS) with or without a silk-gelatin microenvironment, which enhanced DP-specific gene expression and extracellular matrix production compared to monolayer cultures. The DPS model was tested for drug screening using minoxidil, showing increased expression of growth factors and ECM proteins. An in vitro 3D organoid model was also established, incorporating DPS, hair follicle keratinocytes, and stem cells, highlighting the importance of structural features and cell interactions similar to in vivo hair follicles. This model elucidated molecular mechanisms for cell proliferation and hair follicle marker expression, offering insights into hair follicle biology and potential for evaluating new drug efficacy.

community Surprisingly thorough study on He-Shou-Wu/Fo Ti

      in Research/Science  14 upvotes 2 years ago
He Shou Wu (Fo Ti) extract was found to prolong the hair growth phase, inhibit 5-alpha-reductase (like finasteride), reduce androgen receptors, and increase growth factors, potentially outperforming minoxidil in recovering hair follicle size after DHT exposure. Two compounds, emodin and TSG, are identified as responsible for these effects and warrant further investigation.

community AGA responded to steroid shots? Biopsy wrong? Please help!

in Female  2 upvotes 1 year ago
A woman with AGA is using spironolactone, dutasteride, finasteride, oral minoxidil, bicalutamide, and anti-androgenic birth control but still experiences worsening hair loss. Steroid shots temporarily stop her hair shedding, leading her to question her biopsy results.

community How does hair loss and recovery work?

in Chat  12 upvotes 1 year ago
Hair loss varies due to genetic sensitivity to DHT and other factors. Treatments discussed include finasteride, minoxidil, RU58841, and microneedling.

community Hair loss research is a money grab

Hair loss is linked to DHT, with treatments like finasteride and minoxidil being common but not definitive. Economic interests influence research, and there is potential for new treatments like PP405 and RU58841.
