TLDR Supercritical fluid extraction of peach kernel oil is efficient and produces oil with high antioxidant properties.
This study aimed to optimize the extraction of peach kernel oil (PKO) using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) to address challenges like excessive solvent use and solute separation difficulties. The SFE method yielded 46.44% PKO, which, while lower than Soxhlet Extraction (SE), was higher than Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE). PKO from SFE had higher contents of beneficial fatty acids, total flavonoids, and total phenols, and exhibited superior physicochemical properties, such as higher melting point and lower rancidity. Importantly, PKO demonstrated protective effects against oxidative damage in human hair follicle keratinocytes, highlighting its antioxidant potential and significance for future PKO product development.
