TLDR Finasteride effectively treats male hair loss, with oral and topical forms improving hair growth, but oral use may have side effects.
This narrative review examines the efficacy and safety of finasteride, both oral and topical, in treating male androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Oral finasteride at 1 mg daily significantly improves hair count and density but is linked to potential sexual and neuropsychiatric side effects. Topical finasteride at 0.25% provides similar hair growth benefits with reduced systemic side effects, making it a viable alternative. The review also discusses the potential for post-finasteride syndrome, though its direct link to finasteride is debated. Combination therapies, especially with topical minoxidil, may enhance treatment outcomes. Finasteride is also noted for its role in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia and reducing prostate cancer incidence. The review stresses the importance of patient education on potential adverse effects and the need for ongoing psychiatric evaluation during treatment.
