Minoxidil 1 Mg Orally Versus Minoxidil 5% Solution Topically for the Treatment of Female Pattern Hair Loss: A Randomized Clinical Trial

    Paulo Roberto Rodrigues [UNESP] Ramos
TLDR Oral minoxidil 1 mg is effective and safe for female hair loss, with less shedding but more hair growth on the body.
This study compared the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of oral minoxidil 1 mg daily versus topical minoxidil 5% solution daily in treating female pattern hair loss (FPHL) over 24 weeks, involving 52 women. Both treatments improved hair density in the target area, with no significant difference between the groups. However, the oral group showed a more pronounced reduction in hair shedding. Side effects included a higher prevalence of hypertrichosis in the oral group and a 10% increase in resting heart rate, though no significant difference in blood pressure changes was observed. The study concluded that oral minoxidil 1 mg was effective and safe, offering an alternative for patients intolerant to topical therapy.
