Ovarian Sex Steroid Receptors and Sex Hormones in Androgenized Rats

    The study investigated the effects of nandrolone decanoate (ND) on ovarian sex steroid receptors and hormones in adult female rats, involving 90 rats divided into groups. ND treatment disrupted the estrous cycle, particularly at higher doses, causing persistent diestrus. It increased testosterone, 17β-estradiol, and dihydrotestosterone levels, with androgen receptor (AR) expression significantly rising in treated groups. Estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α) expression varied, increasing at lower doses after 60 days of recovery. ER-β levels and aromatase CYP450 expression also increased, with hormonal changes resembling polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study concluded that ovarian receptors and hormones were restored only at lower ND doses and after extended recovery, highlighting the long-lasting impacts of ND on ovarian tissue.
