Oxidative Stress in Alopecia Areata: A Case-Control Study

    The study investigated oxidative stress in alopecia areata (AA) by measuring serum total oxidant capacity (TOC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in 35 AA patients and 30 healthy controls. Results showed significantly higher TOC, MDA, and oxidative stress index (OSI) values, and lower TAC values in AA patients compared to controls. Severe AA cases had even higher TOC, MDA, and OSI values, and lower TAC values than mild or moderate cases. The findings confirmed oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in AA, though the role of these changes in disease pathogenesis versus being a result of inflammation remained unclear.
