December 2023 in “Value in Health” The study assessed the sensitivity of the EQ-5D in measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in 636 participants with alopecia areata (AA) from the ALLEGRO-2b/3 trial. It compared the EQ-5D with the Alopecia Areata Patient Priority Outcomes (AAPPO) measure and the Short-form 36 (SF-36) across different levels of hair loss severity. Results indicated that the AAPPO was more sensitive to the emotional and activity limitations experienced by those with extensive hair loss, showing larger effect sizes (Cohen’s d=-0.79 for emotional symptoms and d=-0.48 for activity limitations) compared to the EQ-5D, which showed only small or very small effect sizes (EQ-5D-5L Cohen’s d=0.24; EQ-5D-Y Cohen’s d=-0.03). The study concluded that the EQ-5D may not adequately capture the psychosocial burden of AA or the benefits of treatment, suggesting the need for more relevant measures.
