TLDR Patch testing helps find allergens in minoxidil treatments, but doesn't ensure alternatives will be tolerated.
Topical minoxidil was a safe and effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia, but some patients experienced pruritus and scaling of the scalp due to irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, or seborrheic dermatitis. Patch testing helped identify allergens, with propylene glycol being the most common. Patients allergic to minoxidil could not use any minoxidil preparations, but those allergic to other components might use alternative formulations with different solvents like butylene glycol, polysorbate, or glycerol. However, patch testing did not guarantee tolerance to these alternatives.
