Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Adults: A Literature Review and Clinical Practice Guideline for the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner

    Lindsey Meidinger
TLDR Nurse Practitioners play a key role in managing PCOS despite lacking specific guidelines.
The document reviewed the complex nature of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), highlighting its multiple health implications and long-term risks such as insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, endometrial cancer, obesity, depression, anxiety, infertility, and dermatological issues. It emphasized the need for primary care nurse practitioners (NPs) to collaborate with specialists for effective management of PCOS due to its heterogeneity. At the time, Canada lacked primary care guidelines for diagnosing and managing PCOS, prompting the development of this literature review to support the creation of clinical practice guidelines for NPs to aid in the diagnosis and long-term management of adult women with PCOS.
