TLDR PCOS is now seen as a complex metabolic and hormonal disorder called PMOS.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has evolved from being viewed primarily as a reproductive disorder to being recognized as a multisystem metabolic-endocrine disorder, now termed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). This change, established in 2026 through a global consensus, reflects the broader understanding of the condition, which includes insulin resistance, obesity, cardiovascular issues, and psychological disturbances. The review highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for early diagnosis, personalized treatment, and prevention of long-term metabolic consequences, addressing the limitations of the previous PCOS nomenclature.
