TLDR Children's hair care needs gentle products and better regulations due to unique hair and scalp differences.
Pediatric hair care presents unique challenges due to physiological and structural differences between children's and adults' hair and scalp, necessitating evidence-based approaches. This review highlights key aspects such as lower sebum production and age-related changes in hair density, which affect product interaction with hair and scalp. It discusses hair cosmetics' classification, mechanisms, and ingredient effects, emphasizing safety concerns like ocular tolerance and potential endocrine disruptors. Despite low individual ingredient exposure, cumulative and long-term effects are understudied. The review calls for gentle formulations with controlled pH and minimal irritants, and stresses the need for clearer regulations and child-focused research, given the lack of age-specific policies in the US and EU.
