TLDR Vitamin C deficiency can persist in high-risk patients despite supplementation.
This case report highlights a middle-aged male with chronic kidney disease, hepatitis C, and housing instability, who presented with scurvy symptoms such as lower extremity alopecia and corkscrew hairs. Despite a 14-day high-dose vitamin C supplementation, his vitamin C levels remained low, illustrating the challenges in treating vitamin C deficiency in high-risk populations with limited access to nutrition and healthcare. The report emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to consider scurvy in patients with unexplained symptoms and the importance of adequate supplementation and dietary education to prevent recurrence.
