TLDR Hair contains complex lipids, including cholesterol and fatty acids, similar to skin.
The study demonstrated that hair contains significant amounts of integral lipids that are resistant to solvent extraction, including cholesterol sulfate (3.3 mg/g), cholesterol (0.6 mg/g), fatty alcohols (0.2 mg/g), and free fatty acids (4.3 mg/g). The principal fatty acid identified was 18-methyl-eicosanoic acid, comprising 40% of the total fatty acids, confirmed through gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. These findings highlighted the complex lipid composition of hair, similar to the keratinized portion of the epidermis.
