TLDR Minoxidil treats high blood pressure and side effects can be managed.
This document from 1980 discusses the pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of minoxidil, a drug used to treat hypertension. Minoxidil works by increasing heart rate and stroke volume, as well as sympathetic input to the juxtaglomerular cells in the kidney, leading to renin and aldosterone stimulation. It is a purely antihypertensive drug that is unable to reduce normal blood pressure. The adverse effects seen with minoxidil are mainly related to vasodilator-induced hemodynamic changes and can be ameliorated pharmacologically. Hypertrichosis may be treated with depilatory agents.
