TLDR Phlorotannins from brown seaweeds may improve skin and hair health in cosmetics.
Phlorotannins from brown seaweeds are promising natural ingredients for cosmeceutical applications due to their diverse bioactive properties, including antioxidant, anti-aging, whitening, anti-inflammatory, and hair health benefits. They offer a safer alternative to synthetic ingredients, which can cause adverse effects. Phlorotannins from species like E. cava show strong antioxidant effects, photoprotection, and potential treatments for androgenetic alopecia by stimulating dermal papilla cells and inhibiting 5α-reductase. They also demonstrate anti-inflammatory effects, making them suitable for sensitive skin treatments. Although still in early development, there is growing interest in incorporating these marine-derived ingredients into skincare and hair care formulations, with comprehensive evaluations needed to ensure their safety and efficacy.
