TLDR Onion oil may help hair regrowth and scalp health, but more research is needed.
This review explores the potential of onion (Allium cepa L.)-derived preparations, such as onion juice and oil, as phytotherapeutic agents for scalp and hair wellness. These preparations are rich in sulfur-containing compounds, flavonoids, vitamins, and trace minerals, which may improve hair regrowth in patchy alopecia areata, reduce scalp microbial load, and support follicular health through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The proposed mechanisms include enhancing local microcirculation, supporting keratin synthesis, and exerting antimicrobial activity. However, the efficacy and tolerability of these treatments are influenced by formulation factors like concentration and extraction methods. The review highlights the need for standardized extracts and controlled clinical trials to better evaluate the therapeutic potential of onion-based hair treatments.
