Keratinocyte-Expressed Podoplanin Is Dispensable for Multi-Step Skin Carcinogenesis

    The study investigated the role of keratinocyte-expressed podoplanin in skin carcinogenesis using a mouse model and found that its deletion did not significantly affect tumor initiation, growth, or malignant transformation. However, the absence of podoplanin reduced tumor cell invasion and peritumoral lymphangiogenesis, indicating that while it was dispensable for tumor development, it played a role in promoting tumor invasiveness and lymphatic changes. The study involved 22-35 animals per group, providing a robust dataset for analysis. These findings suggested that podoplanin's role in skin cancer may be limited or compensated by other factors, such as non-epithelial stromal cells.
