Polystyrene-b-Poly (Acrylic Acid) Nanovesicles Coated by Modified Chitosans for Encapsulation of Minoxidil

    Gilmar Hanck-Silva, Edson Minatti
TLDR Minoxidil can be effectively encapsulated in coated nanovesicles for potential drug delivery.
This study investigated the encapsulation of minoxidil in polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) nanovesicles coated with chemically modified chitosans. The nanovesicles, produced using an organic cosolvent method, had diameters under 150 nm and a negative zeta potential, which changed to positive after coating. The encapsulation efficiency of minoxidil was approximately 50%, indicating potential as drug delivery carriers. The study confirmed the successful coating and stabilization of nanovesicles through dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential measurements, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The removal of residual organic solvent was more effective with dialysis than evaporation. Future research will focus on further characterization and testing of these systems.

An 18-year-old experienced chest pain, headaches, and vomiting after taking oral minoxidil for hair loss. They reduced the dosage, felt better, but experienced sharp chest pain again after increasing it, and are advised to stop the medication and see a doctor.

community Extreme shedding after ~1 year on 5% topical minoxidil — normal or problem?

in Minoxidil  3 upvotes 1 week ago
A 17-year-old using 5% topical minoxidil experienced significant hair shedding after a year, possibly due to a "synchronization shed" and deficiencies in vitamin D and iron. Recommendations include continuing minoxidil, optimizing vitamin D and iron levels, and reducing tretinoin use if scalp irritation occurs.

community Do you think oral minoxidil will become the standard for hair loss in 2026?

in Minoxidil  141 upvotes 2 weeks ago
Oral minoxidil is considered more convenient and effective for some users, with positive results reported, but concerns about side effects and availability persist. Finasteride remains a standard treatment, while some users explore combinations with other treatments like dutasteride and laser devices.
